Book Review Modern C Design

WED, 01 JUL 2009

Have you already experienced a situation, where you realize that there are people out there, which are a lot smarter than you?

That's how I felt after reading Modern C++ Design: Generic Programming and Design Patterns Applied by Andrei Alexandrescu.

This isn't a new book (written in 2001), but it was a real mind opener for me.

If you're programming in C++, this book is a must read.

And as a side note, it's listed in the five most important C++ books by Scott Meyers.

So, what's in this book? Templates. This book is about generic programming using C++ templates.

In the first part if the book, different techniques are discussed in great details and implemented. The second part is about components implemented using the previously discussed techniques. Some design patterns are also implemented.

What's really nice about this book is that everything is available in source code for you to read/study/use in the Loki library. So Andrei isn't only talking about great concept; he has implemented those concepts.

If you've never done anything with C++, this book isn't for you. But, if you know it, even if you've never done templates programming before, and don't really know what they are and how to use it, this book will show you what you've been missing.

It will definitely improve my C++ design skills.
